Deals and Steals for the Weekend - 9/12/2014

Ah, so good to be back on schedule. Coming at you today with a new 'Deals and Steals.'

Alright, last week we turned our eye to some upcoming fall styles (despite the fact that it was about 90 degrees here in NYC). Today, we're doing the opposite, and throwing some last-minute summerwear steals your way (again, despite slightly contradictory weather here in the city). The end of the season is always a great time to shop around for items you may have missed, as retailers are pretty darn motivated to get those swim shorts off the shelves before it starts to snow (ugh).

Another one of J.Crews now-very-regular coded sales. And speaking of those swim shorts, our very first pick is a classy pair in a very cool solid blue seersucker:

I've talked a lot about the benefit of swim shorts that can pass as regular shorts, making it easy to go from the beach to the bar, and these fit the bill perfectly. With the tab closure, 6.5" inseam, and again, the seersucker fabric, I wouldn't have even guessed these were swim shorts until I saw the title. At just $20 after the discount (originally $75), this is an easy snag to be prepared for spring break (when every swim suit will cost way more than this).

Uniqlo Sale Section:
Uniqlo is another one that has a ton of their surplus summer stock at pretty heavily discounted prices. Lots of Tees, more casual shorts, etc., but there were two pieces in particular that I might grab. First is this pair of gingham shorts:

First, a quick note, when you get shorts that come with a belt, you should probably just throw the belt out. Haven't seen this one in person, so I can't speak to it based off experience, but generally, if a belt is cheap enough to be thrown in as a freebie, it's just too cheap. That said, these shorts alone look great - I've stocked up on enough solids this summer, so a fun pattern would be nice, and these are interesting without coming off as childish. At just $10 a pair (down from $40), it's an easy steal.

Second, this will perhaps be my last shoutout to the 2014 Michael Bastian x Uniqlo polo collection:

I think we've had some at discounted prices before, but this $10 price-point (regularly $23) is about the lowest I've seen. I usually stick to the button-down styles, but the vintage vibes on this guy are really cool.


Lightweight Pants (On Sale) at Bonobos:
Just looking at the sale section here, unfortunately no codes for extra discounts, but there's still some things of note to find. First are their lightweight chinos (again, on sale), in normal colors. These hit the sale section every so often all summer, but usually in pretty go-to-hell colors. Today, I even saw some in the ever-classic khaki:

Also popping up in other neutrals like navy and grey, these are hovering around $48 for straight leg, and $78 for slim (which isn't the cheapest, yer darn right, but maybe a code will pop up, or these will drop in price along with the temps). Original price is $98. Worth keeping an eye on, at the very least.

Second, in general, their selection of Oxley's is at the lowest sale price I think I've seen this year. Even without an additional code, grabbing a pair like these for just $48 is a helluva steal (originally  $98 as well):

K-Way Rain Jackets via Huckberry:
Alright, this one is stepping lightly out of summer territory and into fall (or hell, spring for that matter). Ever since I've seen these pop up in one of the menswear publications I read, I've been kinda hooked. Not normally a fan of the kind of wind-breaker-y, packable style, I actually really like these:

Maybe it's that they are actually waterproof (unlike a windbreaker), and still pack into a tiny pouch. Or maybe it's the kinda retro, contrast piping along the zipper. Or maybe it's just the fact that the damn things only cost $45 here at Huckberry (regularly $55). Whatever it is, I want one. A decent selection colors to pick from, but my favorites are the hunter green shown above, or this bright blue.


Before we sign off, just a few other things I'm excited about:

The Uniqlo Fall Line - Can't wait for them to get full-swing into fall gear, especially as I finally live in a city that has B&M's a-plenty. I'm already pumped about their Pure Blue Japan collection for men, plus I was taking a look at their takes on some classic fall menswear via the new Ines De La Fressange collab for women, and I'm hoping to see some similar stuff hit the men's side too.

Frank & Oak Fall Collections - I've had my ups and downs with F&O, but I honestly couldn't be happier with them as of late. I tend to like their fall styles much more than their spring/summer offerings, so I'm pumped to see the sweaters, cords, wool blazers, etc. start to roll out. Deals And Steals for the Weekend - We're Back!!

Holy cow folks, it feels like forever since I've posted - and it kinda has been! And I apologize for the lack of action over the past few days (and the slow movement over the few weeks before that) - as I mentioned the other day, I've been hard at work orchestrating a transition from the great city of Chicago to the great(er? - not to ruffle anyone's feathers...) city of New York! But now I'm here, I have Wi-Fi (and air conditioning, not sure which is more important right now), so it's time to get back on track.

I'll definitely be working on some NYC-specific things soon (especially as I might have the chance to hit up some NYFW events over the next week), and also have some great brand showcases/reviews on the way, but for now, I'm diving back into our regular schedule with an all-new Deals and Steals:

Even though it's like, 90 degrees in NYC, I'm getting pumped for fall, so this week we're highlighting some great cool-weather options as we start looking forward to those lower temps. And we're off:


Men's Knitwear Sale from Woolovers:
If you're anything like me, one of your favorite things about winter layering is sweaters - lambswool, merino, and cashmere...cable knits, fair isle prints, and chunky cardigans. You name it, I'll wear it. Unfortunately, most of these are damn hard to find at a price that won't break your budget. Enter Woolovers - a brand hyped up a lot on menswear forums that I'm excited to try this season. Specializing specifically in knitwear, they offer a ton of great styles at ridiculously affordable prices. Even better, right now they have a sale going on with even lower discounts. For example, this Nordic Fair Isle is clocking in at just $44 (and is regularly only $52):

I love the colors, the heavier weight, and of course the classic (but not too funky) pattern.

This one clocks in at just $44 as well. Reviews for these things ain't bad - apparently the wool is of decently good quality (especially for the price), and honestly I think the biggest risk is ending up with something a bit boxy or large. I've seen some folks recommend sizing down, and I think that will be my strategy. Regardless, these chunky sweaters shouldn't be super slim to begin with, so I'm definitely going to bite on a few in time for the fall/winter season.


Todd Snyder x Champion via HauteLook:
Coming at you from the Nordstrom-partnered (owned?) flash sale site (yep, gonna have to fork over your e-mail address for access to this one), HauteLook is offering up the incredibly-comfortable looking Todd Snyder x Champion collab at hugely discounted prices. I've had my eye on these crewneck sweatshirts since the collaboration came out last year, and here they are at finally affordable prices. There is a variety of colors, but my favorite is this one in grey:

The light color will contrast great with a pair of dark blue jeans, and the details like the chest pocket, raglan sleeves and contrasting trim set the sweatshirt apart from your garden variety options - all for just $60 (regularly $130).

I'm a big fan of shawl collars, but most of mine are on slightly-more-formal knitwear (sweaters, cardigans, etc.). That said, I'm digging this dressed down version, and the shawl is bound to keep you just a bit warmer when it (eventually) gets chilly. Normally a whopping $195, you can snag this one for just $80.

Now, I know that even at these discounted prices, these jeans are pretty damn pricey BUT, ever since I saw them featured on the Esquire Network's Alternate Route, I've wanted a pair, and this is one of the few times that I've seen their Barton line (my favorite) on sale. I could talk em up myself, but just watch the episode (linked above) and you'll see why I dig the brand. Huckberry is offering them in both slim and slim-straight, both for $220, down from $250:

Uniqlo Selvedge Denim Promotion:
Of course, if $220 is too steep for a pair of jeans on your budget (as it is mine), Uniqlo has you covered. Even at the standard $50 price point, their selvedge is damn affordable, and has pretty good reviews as well. Now, you can grab a pair for only $40 as part of their weekly promotions, which is about as cheap as selvedge denim gets. Check them out in dark blue navy...

Deals and Steals for the Weekend - 7/18/2014

After a week off, I bet y'all are chomping at the bit for some awesome sales, right? Ha, well, regardless, here you go. First, the usual:

Extra 40% Off Final Sale Styles at J.Crew (code SALEFUN): 
Wow, so it really seems like J.Crew has had some sort of discount (from 30% to 50%) off of their sale items pretty regularly for, what, months now? Anyway, we'll keep checking back in on them every so often, as they do change the selection pretty regularly. This week, we're pretty enamored with the prices on some of their more summery Ludlow suits. For example, they have this sharp chino suit in olive (pants here), a nice break from your standard khaki:

Now, they do have this in khaki too, if the olive is outside your comfort zone. That said, I think the olive color is fantastic. It's been highly touted across the menswear forums, blogs and magazines, and borrows colors from the military trend and applies them to sharp tailoring. These suits, like most Ludlows, are regularly too expensive for anything short of a planned investment, starting at $464, but with the discount off the sale prices, these will only set you back $255 (jacket and trousers together).

Another great option for these warmer months is this suit in a linen-cotton blend (pants here):

The fabric, alongside a partial lining, is gonna make this bad boy a lifesaver if it ever gets swelteringly hot (surprisingly, Chicago has stayed pretty cool so far this summer). Only slightly more expensive than the chino suit above, these are running $264 (jacket and trousers together), and will be a sharp way to beat the heat.

Huckberry Sales - Bedford and Broome Accessories & Capital Eyewear Sunglasses:
Moving from suits to accessories, Huckberry has two really nice sales going on. The first is for neckwear and pocket squares from NYC-based Bedford and Broome. I actually first got turned onto these guys after seeing this picture on the Tie Society Instagram - it features some hella-sharp Everett ties, and it turns out that Everett is now Bedford and Broome. Anyway, I was excited to see them pop up here, and am really digging this red chambray tie.

I've talked about chambray enough for you folks to know how much I love it as a summery fabric. I already have a blue-grey chambray tie, and have been looking to add a red one to the mix, so I just might have to pick this one up. The discount knocks these down $5, which isn't a ton, but more than covers the shipping costs and leaves the ties running just under $30.

I've also been checking out the section from Capital Eyewear. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know by now that I've been on the hunt for some sharp sunglasses - specifically with clear frames, a trend I've been loving. Most of what I've found so far has been either not quite my style, or super expensive, and these are a fantastic middle ground:

Regularly $125, they are now just under $100 via Huckberry, which is much more affordable than the almost-$400 pair by Garrett Leight that I've been drooling over, but promises to be much more stylish and better quality than something I'll find for $20 at Topman.

Up to 70% Off (or more?) Sale Items at Reiss:
Last on the sale list is this huge discount being offered by Reiss. I personally don't have experience with the brand, but I've read a lot of good things about them. I've tended to be a bit turned off by their high shipping fees, but the prices on some of their high-end tailored suits and jackets are so ridiculously low right now that, even with those shipping costs included, you can't call them anything but a steal. First, this grey wool jacket caught my eye, especially at just $95, from a regular price of $465:

Now, that crazy low price is way more than a 70% price-drop, hence the 'or more' above. Anyway, what I really like about this option, beside the price, is that it's only partially lined, which makes it much more versatile through the warmer spring and fall (and maybe even summer) months than most wool jackets. The color is versatile, the styling classic, what more could you want?

For something a bit more eye-catching, try this navy blazer with peak lapels in a cotton linen blend:

Again, hugely discounted from an original price of $445 down to $140, you can't argue that it's a helluva deal. And again, it's just partially lined - but this time around the fabric is a lightweight blend that makes it even more seasonal. On top of that, I really like the slightly lighter shade of navy, and the peak lapel details are right up my alley.

Browse through the rest of the sale as well - Reiss has a lot of really nice products, usually too expensive, that are surprisingly affordable on the tail end of this sale (I especially like a lot of the knit products).


Alright, we're gonna cut it off after those three, but there are a good deal of other sales going on that are definitely worth taking a look at, so we rounded up a little list of honorable mentions:

Extra 50% Off Clearance Items at J.Crew Factory (code EXTRA50): They're calling this one the 'Clear the Clearance' sale - sizes are limited on a lot of things, but there are some crazy cheap products to be had in pretty much every category.

Extra 40% Off Sale Items at Levi's (code EXTRA40SALE): If you're like me and have Levi's as your go-to for jeans, this is a fantastic chance to get some nice 511's for just a little over $20. They've also got a nice selection of denim jackets as well as shirts, while I found the accessories section a bit disappointing (but I'll let that slide, because $20ish jeans).

Gant by Michael Bastian at Haute: One of my favorite, unaffordable designers, now at unusually affordable prices, thanks to a flash sale from the fellas at Haute. Personally, I'm especially digging some of the casual shirts, but it's all pretty sharp.

Chambray and White Denim at Gilt: I usually stick to the brand-specific features at flash-sale sites, rather than general categories, but damn if chambray and white denim don't look friggin awesome paired with each other. Lots of brands here, lots of good prices.

Deals and Steals for the Weekend - 4/25/2014

Wooo the week is almost over, and you know what that means: time for Deals and Steals. This week, I'm re-visiting some pieces from older posts that have just now popped up at some better-than-usual prices:


30% Off Select Styles at J.Crew (code GOSHOP):
I think I've said this before, but it seems like J.Crew is running a perpetual sale, and they just filter in and out the items that the discount is applied to. 99% of the time, this means that they exclude anything from their Ludlow collection (which stinks, because their Ludlow suits are pretty darn sharp but very darn expensive). This time around, that rule doesn't seem to be applying...at least not for this incredibly tempting unstructured cotton blazer that I was eyeing up in a post about two weeks back:

Honestly, the regular price of $188 ain't too bad for a J.Crew blazer, but the 30% discount takes it down to barely over $130, which is like, Frank and Oak prices. I was just given an almost identical jacket as a gift, or this would be on the way to my house right now.

While at J.Crew, check out the rest of the sale - like I said, items seem to be coming and going so it's worth a browse, even if you've looked recently. Previous discounts have been limited to already-marked-down merchandise, but this one branches out, so be sure to check the full-price listings as well. For yet another item that I would buy now if I hadn't just gotten something similar, check out these 'striped' linen trousers:

The stripe really looks to be super-fine, maybe even a textural thing? Like a whipcord? Anyway, from the looks of it, they appear pretty much solid, making these a great summer alternative for your standard navy chinos. Marked down to $70 (originally $100), they aren't cheap, but don't expect to find good-quality linen trousers for much less.


Spring Sale at Frank & Oak (plus $25 off with our referral link):
Sales only pop up at Frank & Oak every so often, but when they do, they tend to last a while and have increasingly well discounted items. This one is already well underway, and as I was browsing through, this varsity jacket immediately popped out at me:

Remember last week's piece on testing new trends? This would have made a perfect selection to go with my black/white ensemble, and the reduced price of $42 plops it well into that sweet spot of cheap enough to not be a huge risk. Plus, even if Frank & Oak are hit or miss at times, I'll be willing to bet this is better quality than the Forever 21 number I picked out before - bonus.

Like I said, sales at Frank and Oak tend to get better the longer they last, and this one is no exception. I just got an e-mail in the past day or so announcing further reductions on shirts, and they have a few marked down to only $20 - over half off and cheaper than even Target! There's a nice variety available, and my recommendation goes to this blue plaid shirt:

If you're looking to transition your fall and winter plaid styles into a more spring/summer friendly outlet, this shirt is the way to go. The colors are very spring-timey, with light blues and greens, but doesn't take the full dive into over-saturated madras (though I do love me a good madras shirt).

New Arrivals at the Knottery:
Ok, this one is admittedly a bit of a stretch to pull from an old blog post, but I did mention The Knottery back in my post on rainy-day essentials. At that point, I was highlighting their bright knit ties as a way to fight the spring doldrums, but now I'm coming back to them as they release a new handful of options specifically for the summer season. I'll go ahead and give credit to Valet for pointing out these awesome new pieces made from Japanese cotton:

Indigo Stripe Tie | The Knottery

Indigo-dyed Japanese cotton is huge these days, and the attention is well deserved, because it's a fantastic-looking fabric. Lot's of character, bright but not bold, deep and rich...what's not to love? Ok, so the normal prices on this stuff are probably not to love. These ties, however, remain solidly affordable in standard Knottery fashion, clocking in at just $35.

They've also added some 'summer knit' ties, which are more loosely woven. I don't necessarily think the weave is more summery as much as it is just an alternative style (Lands End, I believe, makes loose-knit ties year round), but I still love the look.

I'm a navy/blue addict, so I would grab this one, although there are a few other colors and patterns available. Again, these are marked at $35, a great price for a 100% silk tie of this caliber.


SuitSupply at Huckberry:
Alrighty, we'll close it out with a quick peek at SuitSupply on sale. This like, never happens. Yeah, they had their 'Outlet' with some crazy markdowns last fall, but that was pretty short-lived and there has been less and less word about it coming back. Point is, you can imagine my excitement when I saw just a few SuitSupply suits hanging out in 'The Wedding Shop of Camp Huckberry USA.' There look to be only three options available, but they are smart picks - summer fabrics and staple colors (SuitSupply is kind of known for their more fashion-forward fabrics, so it's nice that the limited selection isn't too out there). Of the three, I love this blue cotton suit:

It's cut in their Copenhagen fit, which they describe as their slimmest fit, which is perfect for a scrawny guy like me. I also love the way that a slim, tailored cut plays with the more relaxed, unstructured construction for a balance that can be dressed up or down as needed - versatility is the name of the game, as always. Best part, Huckberry knocked about $70 off of each option, with this one coming to just under $400 after the discount. Snag em while you can.

Ok, so I was browsing around for deals, and got entirely immersed in the J.Crew sale selection. So much good stuff, such great prices, I couldn't resist picking out way more than the standard two pieces. We'll call it the J.Crew spotlight, plus some extra goodies at the end. Enjoy:

Extra 50% Off Final Sale Items at J.Crew:
Allllrighty so we'll start things off with one foot still in cold weather. I've had my eye on this quilted shirt-jacket since I included it in a course I wrote for Cladright (check it out, I got another course coming up this spring). I might have even had it in a 'Deals and Steals' post already. Normally $170, this is pretty expensive at full retail price, but every so often it ends up at a crazy discount, and I always kick myself for not grabbing one. Maybe this time will be the clincher, as the extra % off has it down to only $60.

Especially at such a steal, this is a ton of bang for the buck. It's light enough to wear into spring, and slim enough to wear under a few layers when it gets all frigid again next winter. Also available in an olive color that hits the military trend spot-on.

Next on the long J.Crew list is this Ludlow dress shirt in a plaid Thomas Mason fabric. Thomas Mason fabrics are widely renowned and usually hella expensive (take a look at the starting price of $170). Already pretty heavily discounted, the extra markdown has this at a pretty unheard of price of just $50:

The pattern is fantastic too...there's a lot of visual interest in the plaid, but the colors are muted enough to make this easy to pair. Spread collar, slim fit, all sizes available, it's a knockout winner, and you won't see a deal like this very often, for sure. 

There are actually a bunch of nice shirts in the sale section, but we just picked out one more. This floral patterned shirt is about as good as it will get for a guy looking to try out the trend, but hesitant to end up with anything too bold or, well, flowery:

First, it's plenty affordable, down to $30 after the discount (originally $88), which means it's not a huge risk either way. On top of that, the colors are all just a bit faded...the blue isn't super saturated, and the flowers are almost barely there, rather than a bright contrasting white. It's the kind of pattern that's almost hard to notice from a distance, but has all the interesting ingredients once you get up close. It's a great buy as we head into spring weather.

And to wrap up the J.Crew list this week, we've got our eyes on summer and hot days by the pool (or at the beach). I'm long overdue for a new pair of swim shorts, and these board shorts are definitely a contender.

I've never heard of an oxford cloth swim short before, and I'm not 100% sure how that would turn out, but I'm very tempted. Oxford shirts are one of my favorite things, so it would make sense that this would end up a winner in my book as well. The color is a just-right pale blue (have you notice that I like blue a lot?) that won't make you look too pasty while you're still working on your first tan, and the low price of $17.50 (down from $70), is - yup - a steal.

So, admittedly no discount here, but with the already low prices of Vans shoes, it's still a great chance to grab some canvas kicks in time for summer. Two pairs in particular stood out to me. First are these in a faded green for $55:

I love the color (it fits in very well with the seasonal color-scheme I laid out last week)...just unusual enough to be unique, but subtle enough that they won't be hard to match. For me, though, the real winning element is the leather laces. I wish you could opt for these as an option on all Vans, except I guess I'd have an even harder time narrowing down my choices.

For those of you looking for more of a classic, look no further than a pair of off-white Vans Authentic Originals:

There are a few options very similar to this (brighter whites, contrast soles, etc.), but in the general white canvas category, these are my favorite. I think the off-white will wear in really well, and the blue trim breaks things up just enough that it's not one solid white blob (although I think some leather laces would look fantastic here too). At just $45, these are a very affordable option for a summer sneaker.


Grayers via Huckberry:
Last but not least, we have a few selections from Grayers available on Huckberry. Huckberry is a flash sale site similar to Gilt or MYHABIT, but with more of an outdoorsy focus, a more tightly curated selection, and an emphasis on quality (although slightly leaner discounts). I don't have personal experience with Grayers, but they have a solid rep, and I've been seeing them pop up in some very nice Instagram shots lately, so I was already interested when I saw them on Huckberry. The selection isn't too wide, but I found a few pieces I really dig. First is this selvedge chambray shirt, marked down to $70 from $95.

It's not exactly cheap, but it's probably one of the lowest prices you'll see for a selvedge chambray shirt. It's got a great balance of rugged and refined, fantastic for casual gear, but definitely polished enough to work into a more dressy look. And yeah, chambray just rocks.

Last, this sweatshirt really caught my eye. It's got an awesome, throwback 70's surfer vibe that just screams summer. The description lists it as super lightweight, which will make it a great layering piece for cool summer nights.

This one has a pretty nice discount, too, knocked down to under $60 from a starting price of around $80. And damn, it just looks so comfortable.

Deals and Steals for the Weekend - 3/7/2014

I put 'Fall Items' in quotes because there are a lot of pretty spring-y pieces available as well. Like these canvas chinos, at $66 (originally %165):

Sure, canvas is probably going to be a bit heavier of a cloth, but the color is definitely all spring. The faded red is a great way to add some color without rocking in-your-face go-to-hell pants.

I'm not sure if I would have normally picked this merino polo, but I saw a similar piece featured on another style blog recently and really liked the way it looked, so I'd be up to give it a try:

Extra 40-50% Off Sale Items at J.Crew:
J.Crew has a ton of crazy good deals right now, and I had a hard time narrowing it down. I ended up going for one warm-weather pick to look forward to spring, and one cold-weather pick to continue to deal with this winter. For the rest of these cold months, this quilted jacket will make the perfect layering piece:

I've actually had my eye on this for a while, but the normal $168 was a bit too much to stomach. The current discount has it down to $80, which is much more do-able for a spring jacket.

For whenever it finally gets warm, J.Crew has a ton of classy but interesting swim shorts in a variety of lengths, sizes and colors, so you can look for your own needs. My personal favorites are these seersucker shorts:

Sea Vees via Huckberry:
I guess you could call Huckberry a flash sale site, but the collections are much more focused on quality, and a little less on crazy discounts. So you get things like these Sea Vees sneakers designed by Todd Snyder:

White canvas sneakers are a classic for spring and summer, and the rugged laces on these are an awesome detail. The markdown isn't huge, but $74 really isn't bad, and still better than the original $92.
